Critical Electrical Fire Safety Cheras, Kuala Lumpur – The recent fire that broke out on the 17th floor of Block 70, Sri Sabah Flats, has once again highlighted the dangers of faulty electrical wiring in residential buildings.
According to Kuala Lumpur Fire and Rescue Department director Muhammad Salleh Abdul, initial forensic investigations revealed that the fire likely started from an electrical fault in the distribution board (DB) of unit number three.
“Our forensic investigation indicates a 90 percent likelihood that the fire was caused by an electrical fault in the DB. We are verifying this as the main cause through technical testing,” he said during a press conference at the temporary evacuation centre at Sekolah Kebangsaan Sri Cheras.
The fire quickly spread from unit three to units two through six, resulting in five units on the top floor being completely destroyed. Fortunately, there were no fatalities reported in the incident.
Muhammad Salleh also clarified that it was the hose reel system, not the fire hydrant, that was unusable during the emergency — another issue that brings building safety into question.

⚡ Critical Electrical Fire Safety- What Can Homeowners Learn from This?
As a homeowner or tenant, electrical safety should never be taken lightly. This incident offers several important lessons:
1. Old Wiring Needs Regular Inspection
Many flats and apartments built decades ago may still have outdated or deteriorating electrical systems. Over time, insulation wears out and connections become loose — increasing the risk of fire.
✅ Tip: Schedule an inspection with a certified electrician every 5 to 10 years.
2. Don’t Overload Your Distribution Board
Plugging too many appliances into the same circuit or overusing extension plugs can lead to overheating and electrical fires.
3. Install RCCB or ELCB for Added Safety
A Residual Current Circuit Breaker (RCCB) can detect current leakage and automatically cut off power, preventing electrocution and fire. Every home should have this installed.
