Dangerous Electrical Wiring has become a serious concern after a recent residential fire in Bangsar, believed to be caused by faulty wiring. The Institution of Engineers, Malaysia (IEM) has issued a stern warning, reminding homeowners and contractors that non-compliance with electrical standards can lead to dangerous and costly outcomes. While no fatalities were reported in this case, the incident highlights the urgent need for proper wiring practices and strict adherence to safety codes in Malaysian homes
KUALA LUMPUR – The Institution of Engineers, Malaysia (IEM) has issued a stern warning following a recent residential fire in Bangsar, believed to be caused by faulty electrical wiring. While no fatalities were reported, the incident has raised serious concerns about electrical safety compliance in domestic homes across Malaysia.
In a statement released by IEM on March 26, 2024, the organization emphasized that improper wiring practices continue to pose a significant risk to public safety.
“IEM would like to strongly remind competent persons involved in the design of domestic electrical installations to strictly comply with MS 1979 and MS IEC 60364,” said IEM President, Professor Dr Norlida Buniyamin.
She added that MS 1979 is Malaysia’s national code of practice for the design of electrical installations in domestic buildings, while MS IEC 60364 is the international standard developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC).

🏠 Dangerous Electrical Wiring: Why It Matters for Every Homeowner
This fire incident — like many others — reminds us that electrical faults can happen silently and without warning. Even a small error in wiring, overloading, or neglect can lead to disastrous outcomes.
Here’s what every homeowner should take seriously in this dangerous Electrical Wiring:
✅ 1. Ensure Electrical Work Is Done by Competent Persons
The IEM emphasizes that only licensed electricians and competent engineers should handle electrical design and installation. DIY work or hiring unqualified individuals increases the risk of non-compliance and electrical fire.
✅ 2. Follow MS 1979 & IEC Standards
If you’re renovating, rewiring, or upgrading your DB (distribution board), make sure the work follows Malaysian electrical standards. This is not only for legal compliance but also for your family’s safety.
✅ 3. Inspect Old Wiring
Most older homes in Malaysia — including many in Bangsar, Cheras, and surrounding areas — may still have outdated or poorly maintained wiring.
📌 Tip: Wiring should be inspected every 5–10 years, especially in homes over 20 years old.
